Design for Charity Fashion Show
Ruby Room Fashion Show Call for Designers
Fashion Show Name: Fashion Faux Pas to Fashion Fabulous
Show type: Women’s Evening Wear
When: September 7 or 8 (exact date TBD), from 7 - 10 p.m.
Where: Lobby of the Paramount Theater
This is a charity fashion show benefiting the Ruby Room in Seattle. www.rubyroomseattle.org
About the Ruby Room: The Ruby Room is a nonprofit organization that provides formal gowns free of charge to Seattle area high school girls who are unable to purchase a prom gown or accessories on their own. Dresses and accessories are collected throughout the year and made available at boutiques in the spring. Each girl is paired with a volunteer personal shopper who assists her in picking out the perfect gown.
This is the third year the Ruby Room will present this fashion show, which is their biggest fundraiser of the year.
We are looking for several fashion designers to show women’s evening wear for this fashion show. Each designer will be given a bag of gowns that the Ruby Room was unable to offer to their clients because they were not in perfect condition. This means they may be stained, faded, torn, or out of fashion (80s - Pretty in Pink anyone?). The challenge to you will be to take these gowns and create at least one gown from them, but the more gowns you are able to create the better. It’s the ultimate in gown reconstruction.
At the end of the fashion show, the gowns you created from the old dresses will be auctioned off and the money raised will directly benefit the Ruby Room and their many clients. You can show other evening gowns from your collection and you don’t have to auction them off. But you must agree to create and auction off at least one gown.
Deadline for designers to sign up is Friday, July 6
If you are interesting in participating contact Jaime Carufel at (206) 491-3487.

Fashion Illustration
This is not in any way meant to be a substitution for fashion illustration. You need to know how and Terry is a master at teaching us the techniques. However, For those of us who may be a little more challenged when it comes to illustration there are aids available.

Pin-up Pen-pals
Sorry this doesn't have anything to do with fashion but some of you girls may want to help.
Here is my new project... I hope you like it and feel free to re-post on other sites.
Pin-up Pen-pals
Pin-up Pen-pals are here to support the troops and let them know people back home care and think of them. We try to make their stay overseas a bit more pleasant by sending photos, letters and care packages. Any girl can be a Pin-up Pen-pal just get together with a photographer or friends and take some 20’s-50’s style Pin-up photos, implied nudes or like photos. Sorry boys, I don’t have any takers for the male Pin-ups.
How It Works
First we have you send your pin-up style photo and letter to us.
If you want a letter back please give them an address to write back to. If you are uncomfortable with the soldier having your address you may email me at r_mercedes_k@yahoo.com and we can try to work something out.
Once you have established a pen-pal relationship you may also send your soldier packages, gifts and of course more photos.
If You Are In the Military
If you are in the military and would like to receive letters and photos from our Pin-ups please e-mail me at r_mercedes_k@yahoo.com with your information.
What I need from you is: your rank, first name, last name and address. This information will not be given out! You must, however, give it to your Pin-up Pen-pal when you write her if you wish to receive more letters from that Pin-up. Include a little about yourself in the so we can provide you with a Pin-up Pen-pal you, hopefully, have something in common with.
Relationships
Please remember Pin-up Pen-pals is not a dating service. You can be of any relationship or marital status and be on the end of the Pin-up Pen-pal or the soldier. However, all the best to you if a relationship incurs.
Harassment
Pin-ups if you harass a soldier you will be reported to the Department of Defense. Don’t do it! Soldiers don’t harass the Pin-ups or you will be taken off the mailing list. Please don’t ruin this for others.
I’m A Photographer or I Don’t Have Time to Be A Pin-up Pen-pal But I Want to Help
You can donate photos to Pin-up Pen-pals and we will send them to the soldiers.
I Want To Be Part of Pin-up Pen-pals!
Send your pin-up style photo and letter to us at
Pin-up Pen-pals

Ribbon Opportunity
Hey there. I'm currently working for a gift rep firm, and one of our manufactures is Morex ribbon. Unfortunately their website dosen't give their products justice. They make all sorts of ribbon from packaging to floral. Morex makes some beautiful satin and velvet ribbons that could be used for garnments as well as story boards. I was thinking of having our Ballard Sales Rep come to the school and give us a presentation and we could place an order. This would allow us to buy at wholesale. Let me know if your interested by commenting on the blog or give me a shout at school and we can set something up!
Thanks,
Tiff

Tender Loving Care
Greetings to all y'all NYFA folks!
Congrats to Jody for getting this blog thingie up and going. Looks great!
If you have a moment to cruise the internet, allow me to invite you to Fashion-clicks.com, a fashion forum I created a while back. I encourage you to invite other fashion folks to visit the site as well! Fashion-clicks was designed to give Seattle area designers and vendors a no-nonsense format to communicate with one another.
I've been mega-busy so I haven't had much time to promote it lately, but I thought I'd let you know about it just the same. The site could use some tender loving care and I'm always looking for moderators if you're interested. It takes lot of people to get a forum going and though I put a lot of work into creating it, it's been harder getting the word out.
Please take a momment to check it out! There's an events calendar in which you can post your events and such as well as discussion forums. There's also a directory of local stores that carry local designers. You should check it out!
If you have taken my classes in the past or are currently enrolled in any of them, you can find the fashion croquis available for download along with a few goodies. Just go to the top-secret NYFA forum. (To get into the forum, you need to PM monica!!!!) At some point I'll be putting classes notes there as well in case you've lost yours.
Ok so here's the address one more time http://fashion-clicks.com
See ya there and don't forget to PM me so I can give you access to the secret forum. Just look for monica inthe memberlist.
Love,
Monica

Fabric finds in PDX

Hey kids....my friend who is a local designer and has also done extensive work with Seattle Opera sent me this email...hope it helps.
***
Here's the run down on fabric in PDX.
Josephine's Dry Goods-downtown PDX. Sorta like Nancy's Sewing Basket, but a little better prices and a nicer staff. Upscale silks, wools, cottons.
Fabric Depot-outside downtown. Like Joann Fabrics, but way bigger with a much a better selection. Tons of cottons, but a really great selection of bridal/specialty fabrics and a good selection of wools and other fashion fabrics. Almost always having a sale. They even have a wholesale dept that's open to anyone....anythign you buy in a full bolt or case is 30% off. They even have a website.
Mill Ends-MIlwaukee location is the best one. great selection of mill ends from NYC and Europe at really great prices. Lots of costumey sorta of fabrics too. They also have a "annex" that is just tables full of flat folds at really good prices.
Pendleton Woolen Mills Outlet Store-across the street from Mill Ends- Milwaukee. Giant rolls of pendleton wool at really great prices. Have a sale once or twice a year. Limited selection, but if they have what you want it'll be the cheapest place to get it. Tons of random notions too.....thread, elastic, tons of buttons adn then whatever the factory decides to throw their way. They limited open hours though, not open at all on Sundays.
***
He didn't give me contact info but that's what the Interweb is for.
Peace-
JodyLeon

Welcome

Hey guys...
This is where to go to read about upcoming NYFA related events as well as other fashion related "goodness".
Feel free to post anything you think might be of value to other students & alumni such as fashion shows, employment, fabric stores...stuff like that.
For my first post I would like to say how much I enjoyed the most recent NYFA fashion show and I am looking forward to the next one where I'm sure I will find myself in a certain type of hell only you designers are all too familiar with!
I hope this blog can be of great use to all current students and alumni of NYFA.
I ask again that all posts made are of a positive and helpful nature. This is not a place to bitch and moan....but I'm sure we can all find a bar on Ballard Ave that would be perfect for that! :-)
